Big Cat Public Safety Act
EWA members, we need to put HR1818 on your radar. It is known as the Big Cat Public Safety Act. However it has little to do with public safety, and is actually an attack on non-AZA zoos that have not aligned themselves with the HSUS.
I know big cats seem to have nothing to do with the EWA, but the HSUS attempt to subvert the Lacey Act to undercut the Animal Welfare Act is potentially a precedent that should concern all animal interests. It gets the proverbial “nose of the camel in the tent.” As can be seen in the talking points provided this could, if passed, have a detrimental effect on many aspects of animal husbandry, hunting and animal ownership in general.
HSUS is pushing for a hearing at House Natural Resources. Our friends in D.C. are reaching out to other animal interests that could be hurt by HR1818 in an effort to build some grass roots support. Any letters and calls to the bill sponsor would be greatly appreciated.

Additionally, I have attached a “one pager” and a copy of the bill that can be used as talking points and the basis for letters and/or calls to Rep Denham’s office.  Tell anyone interested to encourage a “no” vote on this bill.
