A man is in critical condition after someone beat him with a baseball bat following an argument on the street on the Northwest Side, police said.

The man, 54, was crossing the street in the 4000 block of West Palmer Avenue in the Hermosa neighborhood around 9:55 p.m. when he argued with a man in a vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle took out a baseball bat and hit the man on the head, according to police.

The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

The driver left the scene. No one is in custody.

Police taped off the sidewalk in front of a white, concrete building at the corner of Palmer and Pulaski.

Two evidence markers sat below a blood stain, about a foot long, near the ground on the exterior wall of the building.
