nine yer old is shot in chest by grandfather in hunting tragedy.

A Texas family is mourning the loss of their 9-year-old child, Callen Little. Callen was killed in a hunting accident over the weekend.

The owner of Nine Bar Ranch was hunting with his grandson when he accidentally shot and killed the young boy, reports the Daily Mail.

David Walker, the Wise County Sheriff, says that on Saturday morning, 55-year-old Jim Bob Little was hunting with his 9-year-old grandson, Callen Little. Walker says Callen left the hunting blind and without realizing it ended up in the path of his grandfather’s shotgun. Callen died after being shot in the chest.

“It’s a tragedy,” Walker said. “No one wants to see any kids hurt no matter what it is.”

Though the tragic shooting is still being investigated by police at this time, it appears that it was just a heartbreaking accident.

“I can’t imagine anything worse than this,” Rod Townsend, the Decatur school superintendent, said. “There’s probably no such thing as a perfect child, but he was as close as they’d ever seen. It’s been a tough couple of days.”

“His teacher even said he was on his journey to doing amazing things,” Townsend says. “There was not a doubt in her mind that when he got to high school, he was going to be mister everything,” Townsend added.

The family posted to the ranch’s Facebook page to share their devastating news: “Those of you in our hunting family we lost a very special boy today. I know he left a mark on everyone’s heart. God speed Callen we will see you again someday.”

A GoFundMe page was created for a memorial to Callen. So far, it has raised over $39,000. The page was created by Callen’s aunt, who started the page so that her sister could use the money to honor Callen’s memory, reports KARE TV 11.

“There is nothing more heartbreaking than the death of a child. It is unfair that our Callen was taken away from us after only nine short years but, here we are today with great sadness that we say goodbye to our LITTLE MAN,” Callen’s aunt wrote on the GoFundMe page.

“We can’t dwell on the sadness or keeping asking the question ‘why?’ We will never find a reason why such a smart, cheerful and beautiful child was taken from our lives at an age of only 9,” Callen’s aunt added. “Instead, we should focus on how happy he made us when he was in our lives and the impact he had on all of us. We will miss Callen forever and will always remember his smiles, dimples and for the young man he was.”
